quakecon 2004 was the best quakecon yet! the hotel was pretty spectacular, and the
location was a reasonable distance from the D/FW airport. having access to bars and
restaurants right on the hotel premises, complete with a 24 hour cafe, were among the
definite bonuses of the 2004 event. with approximately 6000 people attending, and
about 3000 computers connected together on the BYOC LAN, this quakecon was the largest
one yet. the quakecon official website is at quakecon.org. |

web site popularity and visitor statistics: various statistics showing the most popular pictures are available, including a ranked list of the most popular web browsers and operating systems people are using when they come to visit, and a rough idea of how many people from countries around the world are coming to take a look. at this time (2003-08-21) there are roughly 2200 pictures and movies from 5 contiguous years of quakecon on this site (1999-2003). |

search engine capabilities: i wrote the quakecon.yossman.net search engine to check through the file names of items on this site. this is most commonly used to find people you know, or find a particular set of photos (eg. "case" to find casemods). this link is for the same search form as the one at the top of this page. i've made changes to my search engine to include a bit of a 'fuzzy logic', an ability to try to find images that have moved around the site automatically for you, if you clicked a link leading here that no longer works. depending on how much the site or object names have changed, it may not find anything, but testing has shown it works fairly well for most objects availble from this site. |

slideshow presentation format: the quakecon.yossman.net / quakeconpics.com slideshow is available to roll through the entire photo archive, one picture at a time. currently hard-coded for 30 second rotations starting from a default image, i'm in the process of modifying this behaviour. the script now knows how to start from a given year and roll forward from there; future planned enhancements so far include the ability to stick to certain years, only show pictures with certain people in them, change the time it waits to show the next picture, and automatic restart from beginning when last picture is shown. i wrote the slideshow CGI in an attempt to reach a compromise with all the people that have asked me to install gallery software for easier browsing. most gallery types of software place a much higher load on my servers when there are many people asking for quakeconpics.com at once. |

hi people, yossman here. as one of the original people who helped create the first
quakecon event in 1996, it's been my distinct pleasure to be at the annual "quakecon
experience" ever since. the location has moved around a bit within Texas, USA -- from
Garland, to Plano, then to downtown Dallas, then to Mesquite -- the home of id Software,
where the event was held for four years between 1999 and 2002. it moved back to downtown
Dallas in 2003. though i ceased to have an administrative role with the quakecon event after 2000, i definitely still enjoy going every year to visit friends. quakecon is an opportunity to see people you've been conversing with online all year long, for a few days of more traditional in-person meetings ... and it turns out to be one of the only vacations i can afford to take every year in terms of time/money too. ;-) quakecon started out originally named "#quakecon" in 1996, after the popular Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channel #quake on the 'efnet' IRC network. during that first gathering, around 30 people were there from the start, a number that increased to over 100 people by the end of that first weekend, with the id Software team themselves showing up rather unexpectedly near the end to give an impromptu discussion on the developments of their game engines and to talk face-to-face with the few very appreciative fans present! since then, quakecon has evolved into a major event, highlighting the latest releases from id Software with other hardware, software, and game developers. the range of games being played on the Bring Your Own Computer (BYOC) network by quakecon attendees has long since expanded to include many different multiplayer-capable games from almost every gaming era. quakecon 2003 was expected to attract upwards of 5000 people in total attendance, with a 2100-computer BYOC network, the largest ever yet in north america, as far as i know. my quakecon photo archive here only covers from 1999 onwards since that was the first year i had the camera. it is my hope you may gain some insight, a glimpse into what the event is like to be at. thanks for reading, talk to you soon! quakecon.org and quakeconpics.com references on ladygamers.com: (2003-08-21) ladygamers.com has done a great write-up of quakecon 2003, which also mentions quakeconpics.com (local mirror is here). shouts go out to caligirl for the write-up, thanks and great work yo! ;-) CNN covers quakecon 2003: (2003-08-17) CNN.com ran a story under technology for quakecon; they changed the elements in the story once or twice after the first publishing, re-wording things a little to emphasize the fact that more women and families are coming now to the event. here is the official quakecon 2003 coverage at CNN.com, and here's a local full copy, and a simpler printer and browser-friendly local version here. nVIDIA graphics website features quakecon 2003: (2003-08-19) nVIDIA featured quakecon2003 on their main homepage during the event, i've made a one-time nvidia.com homepage mirror available here so you can continue to see it once nvidia.com's main homepage changes. amusing fark.com crossover: (2002-08-20) fark.com has received a couple of images lately to photoshop into something different, very amusing stuff! yossman and koolaid visiting twin peaks in san francisco, and foto at quakecon 2002 showing people how to play dance dance revolution (DDR). |
